Kitchen Tour

On Friday we got to go on a tour of the kitchen to see where our school breakfasts and lunches are made! A few weeks ago, when we were in the middle of our Nutrition unit, we learned some facts about the kitchen like how many lunches are served in LPS every day. We did a bunch of math learning how much money is spent every day and year to feed our students. Miss Brenda let us walk through the kitchen and showed us how it all works to make this happen every school day!

We saw the dishwasher and learned that it washes dishes in 2 minutes! So they get a lot done fast! We got to look in all of the huge refrigerators, see the oven where our food is cooked, the freezers, and the assembly line of what they were preparing for Fridays lunch. Our favorite part was seeing the HUGE pot they make spaghetti in! Thanks Brenda for sharing your space with us!

Taste Testing

Today we had a special morning!

Brenda from the lunch room brought in some things for our class to taste test that went along with our Nutrition unit! We got some tomatoes and blueberries.

Almost all of the class loved the blueberries and we only had a couple that loved the tomatoes too! Next Friday we get to finish our Nutrition unit up with a tour of our Meadow Lane kitchen that we are all so excited about!

Healthy Snack

Today we had Miss Alyssa come back to our room to teach us a little bit more about food groups and create a healthy snack! We had fun making Cheese Creatures with a cheese stick, pretzels, and raisins and talked about how it was from the dairy group, grains, and fruits!

Handwashing

Coming back from break we started our Nutrition unit! It started out with a lady coming from the University of Nebraska Extension Office to demonstrate handwashing. We got a special lotion to mimic fake germs and rubbed it all over our hands. Then we put our hands under a black light to see all the germs, washed properly, and saw how many germs were left and where we might have missed when washing!

We get to keep learning about all kinds of different things dealing with Nutrition for the next couple of weeks! It's one of my favorite units to teach about because I learn just as much as the kids do!

Nutrition

We have finished up our Nutrition unit and have moved into Body Basics!

During Nutrition, we learned all about how to be healthy, exercise, and all about food! We did lots of fun, different activities learning all about the different food groups and different ways to stay healthy!

This was an activity learning about our teeth and how we need to care for them. We got to try a real orange and a candy orange and figure out which one is healthier for us as well as which one sticks to our teeth. We examined our teeth with mirrors and swished around water and filled out some questions about what we felt and saw.

During this activity we sorted foods by their color on the packaging as well as the food color.

We also played food bingo!

At the end, we got to do a healthy snack! We took some guesses on what we thought we were making, mixed up the powder with some milk, and stirred and stirred! We found out we were making pudding!

We had so much fun on our Nutrition unit and can't wait to learn more about our bodies!

Hand Washing in Kindergarten!

We've been so busy in Kindergarten that it's been hard to find time to get stuff up on the blog for you! But today I'm playing catch up, so there are a lot of posts coming your way!

First up, last Tuesday we had our hand washing demonstration in our room. The students got to put on lotion and put their hands underneath a black light to see the germs on their hands. After learning how to properly wash hands and for how long, they washed up and put their hands back under the light. Some of them got to see which parts they missed or need to spend more time on as the germs were still showing near lots of fingernails and thumbs! This was a fun experiment about body basics and staying healthy! Many more of these will be coming soon!

Then we took a quick quiz about what we do before we come to school in the morning!
